How to Attest University Certificates in UAE

A degree can be genuine and still be rejected for a UAE employment file, visa application or professional licence if the attestation chain is incomplete. Knowing how to attest university certificates before you submit paperwork can save weeks of follow-up, repeat courier costs and a delayed start date.

For most overseas qualifications, UAE authorities need confirmation from both the country where the certificate was issued and the UAE. The exact route depends on your country of study, the document type and the organisation asking for it. What does not change is the need for a clear, traceable sequence of official stamps and endorsements.

What university certificate attestation confirms

Attestation is the official verification process that allows a foreign-issued document to be recognised for use in the UAE. It does not assess whether your degree meets a particular job or licensing standard. Instead, it confirms that the signature, seal or prior authentication on the certificate is genuine.

Employers, free zones, government entities, immigration authorities and professional regulators may request an attested degree certificate. It is commonly needed when applying for skilled roles, certain visa categories, salary-related applications, family sponsorship matters or regulated professions such as teaching, healthcare and engineering.

A university transcript, mark sheet or diploma supplement is different from the degree certificate itself. If the requesting authority asks for these documents too, each may require separate attestation. Always check the requirement in writing rather than assuming that an attested degree covers every academic record.

How to attest university certificates for UAE use

The standard process usually begins in the country where your university issued the qualification and ends with attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The stages must be completed in the correct order.

1. Check the original certificate and issuing details

Start with the final degree or diploma certificate, not a provisional award letter unless the receiving authority has expressly accepted it. Your full name, qualification title, university name and date of award should be clear and consistent with your passport.

Small discrepancies can create major delays. For example, a missing middle name, a name changed after marriage or a variation in spelling may require supporting evidence such as a marriage certificate, deed poll or other official name-change document. If the certificate has been laminated, damaged or altered, confirm whether the relevant authorities will accept it before starting the process.

2. Obtain verification or authentication in the issuing country

Many countries require the university, an authorised education body, a notary or a designated authentication office to verify the certificate first. In some jurisdictions, the university must confirm the award directly before the document can move to the next stage.

This is where country-specific rules matter most. A certificate issued in the UK follows a different authentication route from one issued in India, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa, Canada or Australia. Some countries use an Apostille for international document recognition, while others require legalisation through their foreign affairs ministry. An Apostille alone may not be sufficient for UAE use, so do not treat it as the final step without checking the required UAE route.

3. Legalise the certificate through the issuing country’s foreign affairs authority

Once the document has received the required local verification, it generally needs legalisation by the foreign affairs ministry or equivalent authority in the country of issue. This stage confirms the authenticity of the previous official signature or stamp.

Submit only the version requested by that authority. Depending on the country, this may be the original certificate, a notarised copy or a university-verified copy. Sending the wrong format can mean starting again, particularly where seals must be applied directly to the document.

4. Obtain UAE embassy or consulate attestation

After legalisation by the issuing country, the document is normally submitted to the UAE embassy or consulate in that same country. The embassy attestation connects the overseas legalisation chain to the UAE system.

Processing times and submission methods vary. Some UAE missions accept applications through authorised service providers, while others require a particular appointment, courier process or supporting documents. If you are already in the UAE, a trusted document-processing specialist can often coordinate the overseas stages through the appropriate channels, subject to the rules in the issuing country.

5. Complete UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation

When the certificate arrives in the UAE with the correct embassy or consulate endorsement, the final step is attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commonly referred to as MOFA attestation. This is the UAE-side confirmation that allows the foreign degree to be presented to employers, government departments and other receiving entities.

Keep clear scans of the fully attested certificate once the process is complete. You may need to submit it more than once for employment, visa, licensing or company matters. However, do not separate, remove or damage attached legalisation sheets, stamps or seals.

When legal translation is required

If your university certificate or accompanying records are not in Arabic or English, legal translation may be required before submission in the UAE. A translation should be completed by an authorised legal translator and must accurately reflect names, dates, qualification titles, grades and institutional details.

Translation timing depends on the document and the authority receiving it. In some cases, translation is arranged after the original-language certificate has completed its overseas legalisation and UAE attestation. In others, the receiving organisation may ask for a translated version alongside the attested original. The safest approach is to confirm the exact requirement before paying for translation.

A translated certificate is not a replacement for the original. Keep the legal translation attached to, or submitted with, the attested source document as required.

Common reasons degree attestation is delayed

Most delays are preventable. They often arise because the academic document is provisional, the university cannot verify the record promptly, or a required foreign affairs stamp has been missed before UAE embassy submission.

Name mismatches are another frequent issue. A passport showing one spelling and a degree showing another may be manageable, but only if you can provide acceptable evidence linking the two names. It is better to flag this before submitting the certificate than wait for a rejection.

Applicants also sometimes attest a transcript when the employer has requested the degree certificate, or vice versa. Read the request carefully. For a professional licence, you may additionally need an attested transcript, internship certificate, experience letters or a separate qualification evaluation. Attestation and professional eligibility are related but not identical processes.

Finally, avoid relying on unofficial scans, altered PDFs or agents who cannot explain the attestation order. A certificate with one missing endorsement may look complete but still fail at the final UAE stage.

Plan the process around your deadline

University certificate attestation involves several independent organisations, including your university and authorities outside the UAE. It should therefore be started well before a job joining date, visa deadline or licensing appointment. Urgent handling may be possible in some parts of the process, but it cannot always speed up university verification or overseas government checks.

Prepare a colour scan of your certificate, passport copy, contact details and any supporting name-change documents before making an enquiry. These details help confirm the correct route quickly. If you need more than one academic document attested, ask whether they can be processed together and whether each requires its own embassy and MOFA fee.

For clients who need a clear, managed route, POA&More can coordinate document checking, legal translation and MOFA attestation support while keeping the process straightforward and confidential. The right preparation is more than paperwork: it gives your qualification the official recognition it needs when the opportunity is ready.
